About the Babelian Numbers

In Babel, there's two different sets of numbers. You have a base-10 set of numbers and a base-12 set of numbers. The base-10 set of numbers are BABELARO numbers (NUMEROS BABELARIUS) and the base-12 set of numbers are BABELIRO numbers (NUMEROS BABELIRIUS) . BABELARO numbers are exactly like those accepted in modern science: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. The BABELIRO (base-12) equivalents (limited to the options available in Unicode fonts) are as follows:

0 = ☓ (logic: cross means lacking)

1 = ⌋ (logic: 1 line means 1)

2 = ⎳ (logic: 2 lines means 2)

3 = ▷ (logic: 3 lines (triangle) means 3)

4 = ☐ (logic: 4 lines (square) means 4)

5 = ❍ (logic: 1 circle means 5)

6 = ⍉ (logic: 1 circle meaning 5 and 1 line meaning 1 means 6)

7 = ♁ (logic: 1 circle meaning 5 and 2 lines meaning 2 means 7)

8 = ♂ (logic: 1 circle meaning 5 and 3 lines meaning 3 means 8)

9 = ⎄ (logic: 1 circle meaning 5 and 4 lines (square) meaning 4 means 9)

10 = ⚭ (logic: 2 circle meaning 5 means 2)

1 1 = 𐐒 (logic: 2 circle meaning 5 and 1 line meaning 1 means 11)

12 = ⌋☓ (logic: 1 line means 1 dozen in the left and cross in the right means 0 units, thus means 12)

13 = ⌋⌋ (logic: 1 line means 1 dozen in the left and 1 line in the right means 1 units, thus means 13)

And so on...

In terms of names, there are also different names for both numbers in BABELIRO and BABELARO. Base-10 numbers end in -U and use DEK- (i.e. 10) as second digit, while base-12 numbers end in -O and use DOX- (i.e. 12). Both counting systems are therefore interchangeable, but the base-10 system is mostly used for counting (i.e. one, two, there...) and the base-12 system for grouping articles and nouns (i.e. a/an, both, pair, whole, triplet, etc):

For example, now (i.e. November 2024) in the Babelian calendar is 5,785 in base -10 but ▷☐⎳⌋ in base-12. In writing that is:

5,786 = PENTIMILI SEPTIXENTI OKTIDEKI HEKSU

▷☐⎳⎳ = TRIPLIMILI XETRIXENTI DOBLIDOXI DOBLO.

About the Babelian Calendar

Once we know about the Babelian numbers, I can explain about the Babelian calendar. It is in essence very similar to other calendar because it takes the best of each, or at least, what logically seems best.

First, let's review a few important concepts and words for calendar understading:

  • SOLI(O) = Sun (generic, noun, sigular)

  • TER(O) = Earth planet (generic, noun, sigular)

  • LUNI(O) = Moon (generic, noun, sigular)

  • STEL(OS) = Stars (generic, noun, plural)

  • SIRKL(O) = Cycle, around (generic, noun, sigular)

  • KUAK- = Prefix for partly- or breaking something

  • -ONDO = Suffix for continuous (similar to -ing in English)

  • -ATA = Suffix for facts (similar to -ity in English)

  • -ENDU = Suffix for passive voice.

Then we can understand the Babelian calendar composed by the following concepts:

Parts of the day (KUAKSOLISIRKLOS):
  • SOLISIRKLONDOS = Days = Understood as the 24h of a day

  • SOLIONDO = Daytime = Understood as the part of a day with daylight

  • LUNIONDO = Night/nighttime = Understood as the part of a day without daylight

  • KUAKSOLISIRKLONEN TEMPOS:

    • KUAKLUNIATA = Midnight = Understood as the middle of the night (i.e. 12:00am, moment)

    • FUTLUNIATA = Dawn (moment) (period)

    • FUTLUNIONDO/ANTASOLIONDO = Morning twilight

    • ANTASOLIATA = Sunrise (moment)

    • ANTAKUAKSOLIONDO = Morning (period)

    • KUAKSOLIATA = Midday/noon = Understood as the middle of the daytime (i.e. 12:00pm, moment)

    • FUTKUAKSOLIONDO = Afternoon (period)

    • FUTSOLIATA = Sunset (moment)

    • FUTSOLIONDO/ANTALUNIONDO = Evening twilight (period)

    • ANTALUNIATA = Dusk (moment)

Parts of the month (KUAKLUNISIRKLOS):
  • LUNISIRKLO = Month = Months in Babel have 4 weeks, 5 weeks with an additional day at the month 12th (NULISOLIONDO) and an additional day after the 5th month of every 4th year (YALISOLIONDO) to counter for gap years.

  • KUAKLUNIENDU = Week = 7 day periods starting on Sundays (KUAKSOLIONDOS)

  • KUAKLUNIENDUONEN SOLIONDOS = Days of the week:

    • KUAKSOLIONDO = Sunday = This day is the day of not-deciding. It is meant to be the day to contemplate the week ahead, but not take any action or decision.

    • SINOSOLIONDO = Monday = This is the day of decision. It is meant to be the day in which one initiates investigation about the undecided matters for this week. It is not a day of action but of exploration of a preferred choice.

    • TANTSOLIONDO = Tuesday = This is the day to understand the facts on the ground for the matters we have for this week.

    • FLUSOLIONDO = Wednesday = This is the day to understand the circumstances which could cause our choice given the known facts.

    • MENTSOLIONDO = Thursday = This is the day to understand the surrounding mood and how this interacts with our known facts and expected circumstances.

    • TROLSOLIONDO = Friday = This is the day to act or not to act on the matter of concern in accordance with perceived mood, expected circumstances and known facts.

    • MUSOLIONDO = Saturday = This is the day to be indifferent about the outcome of the matter of concern because you have been thoughtful throughout the week. It is a "sacred day" in Babel because when you have done a good job, you have no worries and you can be just silly. Nothing is important on this day, but to do unimportant stuff. It is a day to enjoy the MU.

Parts of the year (KUAKTERISIRKLOS):
  • KUAKTERISIRKLOS = Quarter/Seasons = Babel has 4 seasons of three months that coincide with the calendar months

  • KUAKTERISIRKLOS I LUNISIRKLOS = Seasons & months:

    • XETIKUAKTERIO = Autum in Northern hemisphere / Spring in Souther Hemisphere = Sep/22 - Dec/21

    • FATIKUAKTERIO = Winter in Northern hemisphere / Summer in Souther Hemisphere =

    • BILIKUAKTERIO = Springin Northern hemisphere / Autum in Souther Hemisphere =

    • KROKIKUAKTERIO = Summer in Northern hemisphere / Winter in Souther Hemisphere = - Sep/21

      • KANSERENDU = 5 weeks: Jun/22 - Jul/26

      • LEONENDU = 4 weeks: Jul/27 - Aug/23

      • BIRGINENDU = 4 weeks: Aug/24 - Sep/20

      • NULISOLIONDO = Last day of the year made to counter that 7x13x4=364, thus needing one extra day for 365. It coincides with Sep/21, thus Sep/22 is the first day of the Babelian Calendar and also the equinox. It is neither part of the 12th month, neither not part of it.

  • TERISIRKLOS = Years = Years start counting on 22 September 3761 bC, which is a few days earlier than the Hebrew Anno Mundi. This is not a preference for Hebrew culture, but a dislike for negative year counting. Hebrew Anno Mundi was preferred because it covers most of written history.
